Catholic Perspective on Decision-Making for Critically Ill Newborns and InfantsIn this paper, we discuss the foundational values informing the Catholic perspective on decision-making for critically ill newborns and infants, particularly focusing on the prudent use of medical technologies. Although the Church has consistently affirmed the general good of advances in scientific research and medicine, the technocratic paradigm of medicine may, particularly in cases with severely ill infants, lead to decision-making conflicts and breakdowns in communication between parents and providers. By exploring two paradigm cases, we offer specific practices in which providers can engage to connect with parents and avoid common technologically mediated decision-making conflicts. By focusing on the inherent relationality of all human persons, regardless of debility, and the Christian hope in the life to come, we can make decisions in the midst of the technocratic paradigm without succumbing to it.

El carnaval ha terminadoEl papa Gregorio VII fue papa de armas tomar. Ofició en la Roma del año 1070; en tiempos de Enrique IV, un emperador joven y ambicioso que quería para sí todos los poderes. Su reinado coincidió con el del papa Gregorio, que le competía en ambición pues quería, además del poder de su iglesia, la católica, el de las otras iglesias y el del Estado. Entonces Enrique IV hizo un concilio, el de Worms, para derrocar al papa Gregorio VII; quien a su vez hizo otro, el de Letrán, para derrocar al emperador, y de paso excomulgarlo. Consiguió ambas cosas. Enrique IV se vistió de harapos para pedir su clemencia, como puede verse en la obra de Pietro Aldi(1852).El Papa le perdonó la excomunión pero empezó una guerra, conocida con el bonito nombre de la “Querella de las investiduras”, en la que tuvo la mejor parte el emperador. Este acabó nombrándole al papa un antipapa, curiosa figura, que fue Clemente III, y se hizo coronar por él como emperador en1084.Traigo a cuento a Gregorio VII debido a que lo que fracasó con su intento sobre Enrique IV fue el deseo de imponer el poder eclesiástico no solo sobre el poder político, sino sobre los poderes de todas las demás iglesias. Logró promulgar la encíclica Dictatus papae de 1075, que, como su nombre lo indica, era un decreto dictatorial dirigido a reglamentar que solo el papa podía nombrar y deponer obispos. Pero fue más allá, trató de que a los papas correspondiera también el nombramiento de los reyes, debido a que en los primeros residía un poder delegado del propio Dios.

The Construction of EU Normative Power and the Middle East ‘Conflict’ … 16 Years onIn this article, I revisit my 2007 piece on The Construction of EU Normative Power (NP) and the Middle East ‘conflict’ and bring in Manners' Arrival of NP in Planetary Politics' (NPA) frame to shed light on how the EU's southern neighbourhood and its social and political fragility becomes amplified by the ‘force multiplier’ of climate mitigation. For example, in 2018, Gaza sewage led to the closure of Israeli beaches and the shutdown of the desalination plant in Ashkelon, which supplies Israel with 15% of its drinking water. This is but one example of how Israel and Palestine are not only inter-dependent but, perhaps more importantly, co-dependent. This article therefore draws attention to the urgent need of thinking on the co-constitution of all life on earth, particularly in a climate-conflict scenario such as that of Israel and Palestine. Water scarcity, rising temperatures and electricity interruptions contribute to the region's instability. If policy-makers from the region and beyond are to co-ordinate policy interventions around water and food insecurity for instance, they cannot ignore intractable conflicts such as the Israeli–Palestinian issue and their ensuing implications for planetary politics. Such enduring ‘conflicts’ represent a microcosmic image of the planet as a whole. Along with the other contributions in this symposium, this piece invokes planetary politics as the space where we need – out of necessity – to think differently: Otherwise, others will be writing the script for us.
