  • Perceptions of privacy on Facebook

    Information privacy in an information age is a paradoxical issue, especially with the recent innovations of the Internet. Social networking sites collect a great deal of personal information about their users. Previous studies regarding both traditional and online commercial marketplace privacy issues have found consumers to be wary of disclosing personal information, but also unaware of the regulations concerning sharing of customer information among companies. This study focused on the differences between heavy and light users’ perceptions on privacy on Facebook. Results from a 25-question survey showed heavy users of social networking sites perceive a greater depth of communication on Facebook and have a more accurate perception of Facebook’s privacy policy than did light users of social networking sites.
  • Modern industrial organization theory of media markets and competition policy implications

    This paper outlines the modern industrial organization theory of media markets including competition policy implications. After recapturing fundamentals of industrial organization theory in a non-technical way, the state of the art of (i) modern platform economics, (ii) the economics of the so-called sharing economy, and (iii) the economics of data-based business models and data-driven markets is summarized in a detailed way and illustrated by modern media examples.
  • Mapping 'Information Economy' Businesses with Big Data: Findings for the UK

    Governments around the world want to develop their ICT and digital industries. Policymakers thus need a clear sense of the size and characteristics of digital businesses, but this is hard to do with conventional datasets and industry codes. This paper uses innovative 'big data' resources to perform an alternative analysis at company level, focusing on ICT-producing firms in the UK (which the UK government refers to as the 'information economy'). Exploiting a combination of public, observed and modelled variables, we develop a novel 'sector-product' approach and use text mining to provide further detail on the activities of key sector-product cells. Overall, we find that the ICT production space is around 40% larger than SIC-based estimates, with almost 70,000 more companies. We also find ICT employment shares over double the conventional estimates, although this result is more speculative. Our findings are robust to various scope, selection and sample construction challenges. We use our experiences to reflect on the broader pros and cons of frontier data use.
