  • Human Rights Education in Religious Culture and Ethics Courses

Emine Zehra Turan (Journal of Social Studies Education Research, 2020-06-01)
All individuals expect to be informed about and respectful of human rights for the sake of international peace. This study aims to evaluate students' views and suggestions on Religious Culture and Ethics courses regarding human rights education in Turkey. A qualitative method was followed by adopting a case study inquiry. The participants were 7th and 8th grade students studying at a secondary school in Turkey. There were 30 voluntarily participants who took part in the study, and completed a questionnaire on the Religious Culture and Ethics Course. The results indicated that religious culture and ethics courses were considered as one of the most suitable platforms in which to teach human rights. The results also reported that there were fundamental differences in the perception of religious education and the emphasis on human and individual rights in religious culture and ethics courses, and instead of universal values, the results show that Islamic values were prioritized rather over universal values. The participants, who talked about the need to cooperate with other courses in a multidisciplinary way to ensure human rights education wanted to find solutions for the security of humanity in this age of wars and migrations. Based on these results, the subjects and themes covered in religious culture and ethics courses can be reviewed and teachers should be more sensitive while teaching human rights. In this regard, educational researchers and practitioners need tools that can be applied in a range of local, national, and international contexts and scales in this age.

The conducted research is an attempt to rebuild ambient lighting in the huge dwellings of the Bey ruling time's dignitaries, in the 18th and early 19th century (1704-1815), located in the medina of Tunis. The research aims at understanding the respective roles of the "architect" and the employees in this "highlighting" of traditional domestic space of Tunis. Two main points articulated our thinking: the first concerns the profile of the inhabitants and of the head of the guild of master masons, who is responsible for the work design and execution; the second point concerns the characterization of the dwelling's ambient lighting spaces. The approach method is interactional. It allows to combine the socio-historical part with the experimental one. This method applies to geometric modeling, numerical simulation as well as light measurements taking, performed in one of our corpus dwellings, namely dãr Ben Abdallah (Bãb el-Jazeera). The types of piercing and solar protection items that were added, as well as their orientation and location in the dwelling, were also analyzed. Moreover, using lighting SOLENE software (CERMA, UMR, CNRS 1563), we developed Light Maps to describe three life stages considered representative of family life of the time. These are: 1. A reproduction of the owner's relaxation moment: the Minister Slimãne Kéhia in his private observatory (kushk), 2. A meeting between his wife, Princess Aziza and her guests in the " T " shape Room of the guest house, 3. A working day, particularly a laborious one, experienced by young black servants on the occasion of the family's annual supplying with couscous. Each of these scenes took place at a particular time of the year and within a specific area of the house. The obtained results allowed us to understand the relationship existing between the users tastes and desires on the one hand, the architect's constructive practices, and know-how on the other, and the lighting quality of the inhabited spaces. So why not speak of a " culture of light " that emerges through people's actions and their way of managing, adjusting, and controlling lighting devices with respect to their mode of life, tastes and aspirations?
