Abstract
This article intends to reconstruct the original character of the primitive Church in Africa, through a careful research of the biblical and extra-biblical texts and characters which allows to trace the identity of the African Church: It was pluralistic in its theology and liturgy, and with the coexistence of Christians and Gnostic Christians. It had strong personal and documentary relationships with the rest of the Christian communities in the Mediterranean basin. Also, it shows a Christianity heavily sapiential in its literary style, homiletic tone and ethical emphasis. Finally, it was a sociologically poor Church with high esteem of manual labour and community solidarity"
