Abstract
"El problema ético, que se plantea frecuentemente en la atención a pacientes terminales, consiste en las dudas que surgen acerca de instaurar o retirar intervenciones técnicas. Esta duda se mueve entre dos polos: por una parte, el encarnizamiento terapéutico que, por no reconocer los límites técnicos de la Medicina, pretende implantar nuevas medidas de tratamiento cada vez que surge un problema en el paciente; por otra, lo que de modo ambiguo se denomina “dejar morir”, que puede consistir bien en no aplicar o retirar tratamientos inútiles o innecesarios (lo que nos ocupa en este caso), o bien en no aplicar o retirar tratamientos útiles con la intención de adelantar el fallecimiento del paciente (lo que constituiría un acto de eutanasia, siempre éticamente incorrecto)" ["The ethical problem that frequently arises in caring for terminally ill patients, consists of questions that arise about establishing or removing technical interventions.
