"John F. Kennedy fue elegido presidente de Estados Unidos en 1960, a los dos años de haber sido elegido papa Juan XXIII. Fue el primer presidente católico de una nación que no se fiaba de que un católico pudiera dejar de verse condicionado por su fidelidad al pontificado romano. Por eso, en su campaña electoral, John F. Kennedy se dirigió a los pastores protestantes reunidos en la Houston Baptist University para convencerles, a ellos y a toda la nación, de que como católico podía ser un buen presidente.
