Abstract
The increase in intensity of disasters in Indonesia has led to an upsurge in the loss of life and property. The eruption of Merapi in 2010, for instance left in its wake 354 dead, 240 injured and 47,486 others living in internally displaced camps. Many villages along the slopes of Merapi became smoldering ruins. In the aftermath of the disaster, Merapi social community, comprising adherents of Kejawen and students of Islam living in the vicinity of Merapi took the initiative of using their respective perspectives to mitigate the impact of the disaster on the local community. Local wisdom which is manifested in various traditional rituals and religious functions tailored toward disaster mitigation were organized and implemented. Based on differing philosophies and epistemology, Kajawen and students of Islam, espoused equally differing perspectives on the underlying cause of the disaster. Consequently, the patterns advocated and used in reducing the disaster also differed. By taking the Merapi disaster as a case study, this article uses a descriptive narration technique to present the meaning attached to disaster and the attendant strategy used, by the Kejawen
