Abstract
One source of pressure on major Australian companies to adopt a more socially responsible approach to their business activities is a shift in the Australian national government's role. Australia's Federal government has withdrawn from some areas of human importance for which it assumed responsibility. At the same time it urges business to exercise a broader responsibility within Australian communities. This shift has manufactured a degree of uncertainty amongst stakeholder groups within business and the wider community about Australian companies' corporate citizenship practices and the changed role of Australia's government. A number of conclusions are drawn, one being that a stronger debate is required within Australia about the responsibilities of government and the responsibilities of business.
