Abstract
Since the times of Greek tragedy humans have learned that there are events which go beyond their control, and that considering human will in a world where fortune can destroy the best laid plans, is futile and foolish. In this scenario human will is powerless contrasted with the overwhelming sense of awesome constraints. And a sense of dread and uncertainty takes hold of our lives. In this paper I argue that many good willing responsible humans who live in developing countries experience daily this deep sense of tragedy. This situation constructs the outlook with which their business reality is perceived and the outcome is a sense of demoralisation, that is, a lack of motivation to change their social reality. Presenting data regarding Mexican micro enterprises will make us understand the grounds for such sense of tragedy. Then I will propose that certain CSR practices of large Mexican companies can offer a starting point for Mexican civil society to break away from the curse of a tragic outlook and regain hope, and initiate a virtuous circle of social engagement and social expectations for, and from, the business world.
