Abstract
This paper attempts to discuss the root of radicalism in Islamic history and historical exegesis (tafsir historis) of Muhammad leadership on building Madinah as a plural society. Historically, Islamic radicalism had appeared in Khulafaur Rasyidin period, especially in khalifah Ali. The author states that sect of Khawarij is the first radical group in Islamic tradition. The author also states that Muhammad leadership in Madinah is a symbol of success leadership in protecting religion from radicalism. As a leader, Muhammad uses his power to build egalitarian society in Madinah.
