Abstract
"«As a church, we did far too little to support victims of apartheid and those who protested against this injustice», said the President of the Council of the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (FSPC) in 2001. With this in mind, historian Lukas Zürcher conducted research into why the FSPC was not more proactive and sometimes even compromised itself through its dealings with the South African government during the apartheid era. It ignored the recommendations of other national protestant churches that publicly condemned the racism of the South African regime and sought the imposition of sanctions. The FSPC merely offered its good offices, while at the same time adopting a low profile amid political controversy and maintaining close links with Swiss companies that did business with Pretoria. In an essay that sheds new light on this chapter of Swiss history, Mr. Zürcher describes how the Gospel’s compelling language can lose its force in a directionless «realpolitik».", back cover
