Abstract
"Os conceitos “ciência e “religião” são, ambos, produtos da modernidade. “Religião” recebeu seu sentido presente no século XVII; “ciência”, durante o século XIX. Um entendimento dos processos históricos e sociais que levaram à formação das categorias duais de “ciência” e religião” é vital para qualquer avaliação de suas relações contemporâneas. Em cada caso, a formação da categoria surgiu através de um processo de reificação, que mudou o foco da atenção para fora do âmbito das atividades humanas relevantes, em direção a corpos abstratos de conhecimento ou conjuntos de proposições. Isso levou a um entendimento distorcido dos fenômenos que tais termos procuravam representar, uma distorção que é aumentada em discussões de suas supostas relações. A natureza construída da relação ciência-religião sugere uma revisão de algumas abordagens-padrão do tema da ciência e religião" ["The concepts ”science” and ”religion” are both products of modernity. ‘Religion’ took on its present meaning in the seventeenth century, ‘science’, during the nineteenth. An understanding of the social and historical processes which have led to the formation of the dual categories ‘science’ and ‘religion’ is vital for any assessment of their current relationship. In each instance, the formation of the category came about through a process of reification which shifted the focus of attention away from the relevant human activities to abstract bodies of knowledge or sets of propositions. This has led to a distorted understanding of the phenomena which these terms purport to represent, a distortion which is magnified in discussions of their putative relationship. The constructed nature of the science-religion relation suggests a revision of some standard approaches to the science and religion question"]
