Abstract
Temporal Subjects | Without monogram. 1541. | This large view, composed of five blocks, of the siege and capture of the city of Buda in Hungary was issued by Stefan Hamer.1 | The title on top reads: "A true rendering or drawing of the royal city of Ofen in Hungary, its siege including the unfortunate battle between the blood-thirsty Turks and the royal encampment in September 1541." The accompanying verses by Hans Sachs date from 28 December 1541. | The castle appears in the center, below the coat of arms of Hungary. In the foreground on the left is the Christian encampment. The Turks are attacking from the right. The inscriptions are in movable type. | Nagler (NM.4.767.2471.27) mentions a woodcut of the same subject, printed from six blocks, with the monogram and the address of Niclas Meldemann. Hampe2 quotes a resolution of the Nuremberg city council of 28 January 1542 "to return the gift of maps of Ofen and Pesst to the painter because we already have many of them." The name of the painter is not given. A woodcut of the siege of Pest in 1542 bears the monogram of Virgil Solis (q.v.). | 1. Strauss 1975, p. 391. For a complete list of Hamer's publications, see TIB 21 commentary. | 2. Hampe 1904, no. 2633. | - Keller II. 423. | - Goetze 189. | - Schreyl 1976, no. 191.
