Sexuated Topology and the Suspension of Meaning: A Non-Hermeneutical Phenomenological Approach to Textual AnalysisBailey, Steven (2014-07-31)This study assumes the subject's pursuit of meaning is generally incapacitating and should be suspended. It aims to demonstrate how such a suspension is theoretically accomplished by utilizing Lacan's formulae of sexuation integrated with his work in discourse theory and topology. Part I places this study into context by examining scholarship from the established fields of hermeneutics, phenomenology, (post)structuralism, aesthetic theory and psychoanalysis in order to extract out their respective theory of meaning. These theories reveal that an historical struggle with meaning has been underway since the Reformation and reaches near crisis proportions in the 20th century. On the one hand this crisis is mollified by the rise of Heideggerian-Gadamerian hermeneutical phenomenology which questions traditional epistemological approaches to the text using a new ontological conceptualization of meaning and a conscious rejection of methodology. On the other hand this crisis is exacerbated when the ubiquitous nature of meaning is itself challenged by (post)structuralism's discovery of the signifier which inscribes a limit to meaning, and by the domains of sense and nonsense newly opened up by aesthetic theory. These historical developments culminate in the field of psychoanalysis which most consequentially delimits a cause of meaning said to be closely linked to the core of subjectivity. Part II extends these findings by rigorously constructing out of the Lacanian sexuated formulae a decidedly non-hermeneutical phenomenological approach useful in demonstrating the sexual nature of meaning. Explicated in their static state by way of an account of their original derivation from the Aristotelian logical square, it is argued that these four formulae are relevant to basic concerns of textual theory inclusive of the hermeneutical circle of meaning. These formulae are then set into motion by integrating them with Lacan's four discourses to demonstrate the breakdown of meaning. Finally, the cuts and sutures of two-dimensional space that is topology as set down in L'étourdit are performed to confirm how the very field of meaning is ultimately suspended from a nonsensical singular point known in Lacanian psychoanalysis as objet a. The contention is that by occupying this point the subject frees himself from the debilitating grip of meaning.
Atitudes frente às próteses auditivas Attitudes towards hearing aidsBárbara Guimarães Bastos; Raquel Beltrão Amorim; Deborah Viviane Ferrari (CEFAC Saúde e Educação, 2009-01-01)OBJETIVOS: avaliar as atitudes frente à deficiência auditiva e o aparelho de amplificação sonora individual (AASI) em candidatos e usuários destes dispositivos. Verificar se existe relação entre tais atitudes e os dados demográficos, audiométricos e características do AASI. MÉTODOS: 63 indivíduos (35 homens e 28 mulheres, idade média de 64,3 anos) com deficiência auditiva neurossensorial bilateral de diferentes graus, candidatos e usuários de AASI responderam o "Questionário de Atitudes Frente à Deficiência Auditiva" (ALHQ v3.0). Foi analisada a distribuição da pontuação das subescalas do ALHQ e realizada a correlação entre estas e os dados demográficos, audiológicos e da adaptação do AASI dos participantes. Foram também realizadas comparações da pontuação do ALHQ entre os grupos de candidatos e usuários, entre homens e mulheres. RESULTADOS: não houve distribuição normal das respostas nas subescalas do ALHQ. Não houve correlações entre a pontuação do ALHQ com os dados demográficos e audiológicos. Foram verificadas correlações fracas e significativas entre as subescalas do questionário: "estratégias negativas" e "estima" (rho=-0,39), "negação" e "estima" (rho=-0,27), "estratégias negativas" e "associações negativas" (rho=0,25) e "negação" e "estratégias negativas" (rho=-0,30). Houve diferença significativa nas subescalas estratégias negativas (p=0,02) e associações negativas (p=0,00) entre o grupo de candidatos e usuários. Não houve diferença na pontuação entre homens e mulheres. CONCLUSÃO: a existência de atitudes negativas frente à deficiência auditiva e ao uso do AASI reforça a necessidade do aconselhamento de ajuste pessoal incluído no processo de adaptação do AASI em adultos e idosos. É necessário validar o questionário traduzido para o português brasileiro.<br>PURPOSE: to evaluate the attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids in a group of hearing aid candidates and users. To verify if attitudes are related to demographical and audiometric data as well as hearing aid characteristics. METHODS: 63 participants (35 men and 28 women, mean age 64.3 years) with bilateral sensorineural hearing losses of different degrees, hearing aid candidates or users answered the "Attitudes Towards Hearing Loss Questionnaire" (ALHQ v3.0). The ALHQ scores distribution was analyzed. The correlation between ALHQ scores and demographical and audiological data as well as the hearing aid fitting characteristics were obtained. The ALHQ scores were also compared between groups of hearing aid candidates and users as well as among men and women. RESULTS: ALHQ subscale responses did not follow normal distribution. No correlation was found among demographical data, mean hearing thresholds and ALHQ scores. There were weak but significant correlations between the subscales: "negative coping strategies" and "hearing-related esteem" (rho =-0.39), "denial" and "hearing related esteem" (rho =-0.27), "negative coping strategies" and "negative associations" (rho = 0.25) and "denial" and "negative coping strategies" (rho =-0.30). A statistical difference was found for "negative coping strategies" and "negative associations" subscales between hearing aid candidates and users. No statistical difference was found for ALHQ scores among men and women. CONCLUSION: the existence of negative attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids reinforces the need for personal adjustment counseling. It is necessary to validate the ALHQ questionnaire translated into Brazilian Portuguese.
EDUCATION POLICY AND EFL CURRICULUM IN INDONESIA: BETWEEN THE COMMITMENT TO COMPETENCE AND THE QUEST FOR HIGHER TEST SCORESAnita Lie (2007-01-01)Education policies and curricula provide the context and specific expectations that drive student learning and achievement towards a sustainable future. The underlying policies and practices in the EFL classrooms do not always match consistently. There is an emerging need to counterbalance the power of policymakers in ensuring that balanced, pedagogically sound education policies and EFL curriculum are produced, carried out, and monitored. As one of civil society organizations, TEFLIN is well positioned to serve that mission. TEFLIN may take the initiative to engage in the EFL curriculum review project, EFL curriculum design, and reform in EFL teacher education and certification.
