Abstract
Paper “Christmas traditions in Contemporary Latvia” studies Christmas traditions in Latvia among young people. The main source of the study was questionnaires filled by 100 students of the University of Latvia and Ogre Vocational School No.43. To follow up the direction of Christmas traditions and contemporary changes, Christmas has been studied from the historical aspect, covering the period based in the traditional folklore up to the period when celebrating Christmas was forbidden during the Soviet time (1945-1990). Christmas traditions are varied among the contemporary youth. National traditions and Christian influence plays an important role in celebrating Christmas, but there is a trend for these traditions to disappear, leaving Christmas as a family holiday with a common meal and exchange of gifts.
