Abstract
This article explores sociologically some interactions occurring around religion in the prison context by using de Certeau’s concepts of tactics, practices and spaces. Drawing on an empirical research in two prisons in Eastern Germany, this text thematises the social use of religion by inmates as well as by prison chaplains. The analysis focus on the inmates relations to space, time and to the power structures as developed in their religious practices. It takes the religious plurality of the detained population as a starting point to demonstrate the way in which religion allows for getting hold of space, self-control and time. Numerous quotes illustrate the argument.
