Abstract
The article describes an Egyptian parliamentary debate on the application of divine law (Sharî’a). It shows how the “relevance of Quran”, put forward by speakers during the debate, is interlaced with other elements pertinent to the parliamentary space be they democratic, national or legal. However, one of these, “democratic relevance” overrides the others, so that if the Koranic relevance seems dominant in speech, the organization, the direction and dynamism of the exchanges are designed to serve the goals of the parliamentary institution.
