Abstract
The American University at Cairo REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION 1953-54 Article II, Section 5-e of the By-Laws states: Three or more Trustees, to be elected by the Board, and one of the General Secretaries, shall constitute a Committee on Education. It shall be their duty, in consultation with the President of the Uni-versity, to seek new teachers and other officers to fill positions designated by the Council or created by special action of the Board, to keep in touch with prospective candidates, to recommend suitable candidates for appointment, to make recommendations to the Board concerning staff agreements and all matters of relationship between staff and Trustees, an d to have general oversight of the educational work of the University. In the selection of members of the Faculties and administrative officers, Christian character -5nd-miss shall have primary consideration. As far as possible new appointments to the field shall be made only after conference or correspondence with the President of the University, and in every case the final and formal notice of ap-pointment shall be given as from him. Reappointment of members of the field staff shall be made only after securing the judgment of the President or of the Council, and as far as possible alterations of contract shall be made only with the consent of the Council. Whenever an appointment is made the Committee on Education shall furnish to the Secretary complete data as to contract and facts concerning the appointee, a copy of which shall be sent by the Secretary to the Council in advance of the appointee's arrival on the field. Except by special action of the Trustees, the terms of Staff agree-ments shall be as stated in Article IX /which covers financial arrangements]. It has been a busy year for the Committee, with meetings held November 24, 1953, January 30, April 2, April 30-May 1, June 12, July 30 and October 23, 1954. It is to be regretted that three permanent and four short-term staff members resigned during the year: the Rev. Harrell F. Beck from the School of Oriental Studies, Dr. John B. Adams from the Faculty of Education, and Miss lilma M. Rauschart from the president's office; Messrs. Robert C. Lugton from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harry W. Seymour from the registrar's office, and Silas M. Vaughn from the bursar's office, each having worked two of his three years, and Donald A. Byington after one year in journalism. The Committee codperated with the committee on selection of new president, and interviewed several candidates who had bu un suggested for the post. zoIdentifier
