Leaving a vocational job: the case of classical dance

Abstract

If dancing consists in entering an artistic process, it also means exercising a job with real specific methods and stakes. One of these peculiarities lies in the claiming of a professional investment, which does not follow the desire of material profit but favors the commitment by passion. Thus, the classical dancer asserts that he belongs to a “vocation job” and builds his professional identity in opposition to the secular world.However, how to think about quitting a job based on the “body and soul” commitment, and which finds its meaning in the belief of belonging to a peculiar community?The goal of this thesis is to consider the representations dancers have of this exit in order to understand, in the first place, mechanisms that entail or prevent from becoming aware of this decisive moment of the career. It is a matter of analyzing the social determinants of this genesis of the belief in artistic vocation that ends up in the internalization of a life plan. In the second place, the mobilization of the concept of Career allows to consider reconversion, not as a state but as the result of a process truly started during the performer activity, leading to think that it is necessary to go through clearly identifiable steps to take up a new form of employment. The dancer builds his career from a work of assertion and standards incorporation, which are going to generate many occasions of social and/or professional reinvestment when leaving the scene.This research based on an ethnographic approach is at the crossroads of the sociology of work, sociology of art and the sociology of ways of life.

Si danser c’est s’inscrire dans une démarche artistique c’est également exercer un métier aux modalités et aux enjeux bien spécifiques. Une de ses particularités réside dans la revendication d’un investissement professionnel n’obéissant pas au désir de gains matériels mais favorisant l’engagement par « passion ». Ainsi, le danseur classique affirme son appartenance à un « métier de vocation » et façonne son identité professionnelle en opposition avec le monde profane. Mais comment penser la sortie d’un métier qui se vit sur le mode de l’engagement « corps et âme » et qui prend tout son sens dans la croyance en l’appartenance à un collectif particulier ?Cette thèse propose de considérer les représentations que les danseurs se font de cette sortie afin de comprendre dans un premier temps les mécanismes qui enclenchent ou empêchent la prise de conscience de ce moment charnière de la carrière. Il s’agit d’analyser les déterminants sociaux de cette genèse de la croyance en la vocation artistique qui aboutit à l’intériorisation d’un projet de vie.Dans un second temps, la mobilisation du concept de Carrière permet d’envisager la reconversion, non pas comme un état, mais comme le résultat d’un processus bien engagé durant l’activité d’interprète, laissant entrevoir l’idée que, pour se reconvertir, il faut passer par des étapes nettement identifiables. La Carrière du danseur se construit à partir d’un travail d’imposition et d’incorporation des normes qui vont générer diverses occasions de réinvestissement social et/ou professionnel au moment de quitter la scène.Cette recherche fondée sur une démarche ethnographique se situe donc au carrefour de la sociologie du travail, de la sociologie de l’art et de la sociologie des modes de vie.
