Abstract
[ABSTRACT] This thesis is an analysis of the socio-political acts of the House of Monterrey within the context of the history of Spain during the years of its prominence and in the light of the required criteria for the noble houses to gain access to that social class and remain in it according to the most important bibliography and documents .
After studying the 4 centuries of history of the House of Monterrey, which dates back to Sr. and Sra. de Biedma at the end of the 13rd century, It is known that the House of Monterrey meets all the needed requirements of a prestigious noble house. This prestige is achieved due to the connection with the Zúñigas at the beginning of the 14th century. The Ulloas donations at the end of 15th century enhanced this reputation. More national importance and prestige was gained with the incorporation of the Acevedos- Fonsecas in the 16th century and its best recognition with the union of the Guzmán- Haros is accomplished in the 17th century until its final union to the House of Alba in the 18th century.
Politically, they took over every possible post within the political -administrative scheme of the monarchy from the adelantamientos in Galicia, the embassies in Europe, viceroyalties in America, Italy and Catalonia or council presidencies and general governments showing total loyalty to the monarchy.
From a military point of view, they were present in the key moments of our history supporting the kings both personally and by taking part in the national campaigns with great human and economical effort.
Economically, they suffered the class crisis in the Modern Age, starting its economic recovery in the first third of the 17TH century after the favourable judicial sentences and the given royal benefits.
Socially, they used the symbols of power within their class by owning palaces and castles, supporting and founding religious charities or leaving plenty of bequests to pious works. Besides, from a cultural point of view, they favoured the teaching, provided grants and supported the Arts.
These centuries-old services were awarded with the following titles that the monarchy bestowed to the House such as the County of Monterrey , the County of Fuentes and the Marquisate of Tarazona. All these titles allowed the House to reach the Grandeur and that is the reason why the House of Monterrey must lead a post of honour in the history of Spain and in the nobility.
