Abstract
English: This work has been realized as an Independent Study Project through the study abroad program SIT Peru: Indigenous Peoples and Globalization. Using an ethnographic approach composed of interviews and observations of religious life in the rural, indigenous communities of Patacancha and Rumira Sondormayo, this study explores the current issue of the Evangelical Cristian influence on Catholic Andean culture. In recent decades, Evangelicalism has increased exponentially in Peru, with conversion rates growing quickly among indigenous Andean communities. According to the theory of emergence and persistence born of a 1988 conference of leading Andean scholars, Andean culture inherently allows for change within the Catholic-Andean religious worldview, due to the continual process of redefining what is culturally meaningful to a community. However, unlike previous changes within indigenous Peruvian communities, Evangelical conversion requires a complete rejection of the Catholic- Andean religion and its traditions. Due to this requirement, this case study finds consistent evidence of significant changes within the community in question. This study questions whether or not Evangelical conversion is a break with Andean cultural identity or if it is another, perhaps more radical, redefinition of the same, taking into account the perspectives of Andean people themselves.
