Aufbau first appeared as a German-language weekly in New York in 1934. It was intended to help educate and integrate the thousands of German Jews fleeing Germany. During the war, Aufbau became an important source of news and was among the first publications to publish information about the concentration camps. Its pages served as a platform for prominent German intellectuals and philosophers like Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt and Thomas Mann.
The circulation, which had reached 100,000 during the war, had shrunk to about 2,500 by 2003, and the last issue was published in March of 2004. JM Juedische Medien AG, or Jewish Media, in Zurich bought the publishing rights and the archive, and the first issue of the new Aufbau came out in early February. It is now a European-focused monthly that will sustain itself through advertising.
