Abstract
Grave of Cornelius Harnett (1723-1781), Revolutionary patriot and statesman. Harnett was born in Wilmington and was an early supporter of independence. He served in the Continental Congress as a delegate from North Carolina from 1777 to 1780. He was captured by a British raiding party and died while in captivity. The Harnett Obelisk is at center in the intersection of Fourth and Market streets. (Also see #927). Across Fourth Street is the front facade of the Temple of Israel organized in 1872. The Temple (1875-1876) is the oldest Jewish house of worship in North Carolina. Alex. Strausz designed the building in the Moorish style, with onion shaped domes atop the two front towers.
