Abstract
In the SW corner of Plaza de la Alhóndiga of Cordoba, close to the Mosque-Cathedral and to the Guadalquivir river, there is an old building of modernist style that has in its facade a big horseshoe arc built in ashlars and with islamic mediaeval appearance. The precise chronology and the relation of this architectonic element with the rest of the building were rather doubtful. Due to the lack of documentation in this sense it was thought that a mediaeval structure could be included in the modern building. For this reason, it was decided to carry out an archaeological research in front of the arc, as well as a cleanup of the structure. The reached stratigraphy and the finding of an inscription in the arc, with the construction’s date of the building and the name of the architect which made the project, proved that the horseshoe arc, like the whole facade, dates back only to the beginning of the 20th. century and not to islamic mediaeval times.
