Trayectoria del virrey de México Don Rodrigo Pacheco y Osorio y de su patrimonio suntuario al servicio de Felipe IV

Abstract

In this article the professional trajectory of Rodrigo Pacheco Osorio and his travels at the service of the Spanish Monarchy are studied. The sumptuary patrimony is analyzed that he carried in his displacements for the correct exercise of his duties �silver, jewels, carpets, furniture and textiles�. Especially, the origin, the scope and the volume of his furnishings during his stay in Mexico are considered. Finally, the personal property of the Viceroy is valued as a reflection of his artistic taste and as well as of the way of life in the viceroyalty court and as an example of the need for ostentation of the Hispanic nobility in the 17th century.

En este artículo se estudian la trayectoria profesional de Rodrigo Pacheco Osorio y sus viajes al servicio de la Monarquía Española. Se analiza el patrimonio suntuario que llevaba consigo en sus desplazamientos para el correcto ejercicio de sus funciones �plata labrada, joyas, tapices, muebles y textiles�. Se estima, especialmente, la procedencia, el alcance y el volumen de su ajuar durante su estancia en México. Por último, se valoran sus bienes muebles como reflejo de su gusto artístico y del modo de vida en la corte virreinal, y como ejemplo de la necesidad ostentativa de la nobleza hispana en el siglo XVII.
