Latin Bible versions the age of Reformation and post-Reformation : On the delopment of new Latin versions of the Old Testament in Hebrew and on the Vulgate as revised and evaluated among the Protestants

Abstract

This article describes the development of Latin translations of the Old Testament in the period 1500-1750, from the beginning of biblical Hebrew humanism about 1500 until the era of Enlightenment in the middle of the eighteenth century. In particular, the methods of translation are investigated and the reception among contemporary critics is accounted for. The article also surveys the use of and attitude towards the Vulgate in the Protestant camps.
