Quievit terra in diebus suis : Considerations about the war in the Summa Totius Honorio Agustodunense

Honorius Augustodunensis (XIIth century), in his universal chronicle entitled Summa totius de omnimoda historia, makes numerous comments that reveal an opinion very contrary to warfare and to any kind of violence. This can be seen in three episodes of ancient history: the conquests of Alexander the Great, the formation of the Roman Empire and the rulers of the Jewish people. But Honorius is also very critical of war in his own time and, inparticular, of the disputes between the Roman Empire and the Papacy. Thus, Honorius’ comments on history disclose a real doctrine on warfare and, in turn, allow us to speculate on the identity of this enigmatic author

Honorio Agustodunense (s. XII), en su crónica universal titulada Summa totius de omnimoda historia, hace numerosos comentarios que revelan una opinión muy contraria a la actividad bélica y a cualquier tipo de violencia. Esto se puede apreciar en tres episodios de la historia antigua: las conquistas de Alejandro Magno, la formación del Imperio Romano y los gobernantes del pueblo judío. Pero Honorio también es muy crítico de la guerra en su propio tiempo y, en particular, de las disputas entre el Imperio Germánico y el Papado. Así, los comentarios de Honorio a la historia dejan al descubierto una verdadera doctrina sobre la guerra y, a la vez, nos permiten especular sobre la identidad de este enigmático autor.
