Abstract
The IUFM - a university center dedicated to the training and professionalization of teachers - has a unique, although sometimes difficult position, vis-a-vis original research.  In this article, I am interested in the ways in which this marginal position has furthered the development and acceptance of new ideas, particularly work on French as a formal language of schooling - le français de scolarisation - an area that is of great interest to educators.  This work has been fueled by the IUFM’s interdisciplinarity and thus its ability to bring together different ideas, pedagogical theories and practices, and research domains, all while linking research and educational institutions.  Although very different from traditional disciplinary research, this cross-fertilization between professional and academic milieux led to the creation of an important and highly original idea.
