Abstract
This article presents the strategy of the United States towards the promotion of a social clause in trade agreements since the signing of the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC), a side-agreement of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). First, we introduce the principal bilateral and regional social clauses negotiated by the United States. Secondly, we discuss the enforcement of the clause. Thirdly, we have a general discussion on the issue while addressing the debates surrounding the social clause. We conclude by an opening on the international influence of the US strategy.
