L’inscription d’une église rurale du territoire narbonnais au ve siècle

Abstract

Étude de l’inscription célébrant la dédicace d’une église située sur la pente de l’ancien oppidum d’Ensérune (territoire de Narbonne). La pierre est très détériorée, mais il existe une bonne copie du xviie s. La date consulaire, d’abord (450 plutôt que 455). Les années de presbytérat dont fait état le constructeur et la signification de ce comput personnel. La légitimité chrétienne du vœu. La dédicace d’une église par un donateur, même prêtre, toute différente de la consécration par l’évêque. Les martyrs Vincent de Saragosse, Agnès de Rome, Eulalie de Mérida. Le dédicant : un prêtre d’origine germanique, romanisé et orthodoxe.

This is a study of the inscription celebrating the consecration of a church located on the slope of the antique oppidum of Ensérune (in Narbonese territory). The stone is severely dilapidated but a XVIIth century copy exists. The consular date to begin with (450 rather than 455). The years of presbyterate mentioned by the builder and the meaning of that personal computation. The Christian legitimacy of the vow. The consecration of a church by a donator, priest though he may be, very different from the consecration by a bishop. The martyrs Vincentius from Saragossa, Agnes from Rome, Eulalia from Mérida. The dedicator : a priest of Germanic origin, romanized and orthodox.
