Abstract
During the last decades, the legal framework of secularism (“laicity”) was contested and changed on the grounds that French institutions are endangered by Islamic practices, notably school education. The paper recalls that such reading is empirically dubious, and it argues that it would be of great educational interest to maintain a liberal approach to these issues
