Abstract
Based on the analysis of archaeoezoological data, this paper presents an overview of the development of animal exploitation and its variability from the late Chalcolithic to the Islamic period from Eastern Iran to Southern Turkmenistan. In general terms this is a pastoral subsistence economy, mainly with sheep and goat. However, hunting can also be an important component of the food economy. The sites in Turkmenistan show more diversified profiles than the two sites examined from Iran.
