Abstract
The thesis, proposed by the mediaeval theologian Abû Hâmid al-Ghazâlî, that “there is not potentially anything whatever more excellent and more complete than what is” has been for centuries in the very center of theological polemics in Islam. In spite of the fervent criticism against this so called undermining of God’s omnipotence, the statement of al-Ghazâlî had a number of apologists in such prominent figures as Ibn ‘Arabî, al-Suyûtî, ‘Abd al-Qâdir, etc. In his major work Kitâb al-Mawâqif, ‘Abd al-Qâdir analyzes the famous statement of al-Ghazâlî, standing up for it in full. In order to provide arguments for his thesis, ‘Abd al-Qâdir turns to the heritage of Ibn ‘Arabî, whose notions he unflinchingly shares in all points of metaphysics.
