Abstract
Xinjiang is an autonomous region located in the west of China. Forty-one percent of the population is Han and about 45% is made up of Uyghurs, Muslims and Turkish speaking people who, for decades, have demanded their independence.  Consequently, the Chinese government tries to control strongly this territory. This article analyzes the spatial impacts of sinicisation in small and medium-sized towns of Xinjiang. The influence of central government on these urban areas is characterized by the fragmentation of the historic Uyghur neighbourhoods and by the “folklorisation” of the traditional built environment. The city becomes a focus of power, symbolising political tensions between local populations and the Chinese State.
