Abstract
The problem of mourning in Freud arises out of the combination of affection and work. Separating that which is work and that which is affection in mourning makes it possible to locate its ethical dimension and enquire into its operation. How does mourning operate? What does it operate in a subject? Because the dimensions of narcissism, object, and desire are constitutive elements of the problem of mourning, the latter is not foreign to the operation of analysis. The article suggests that analysis is a type of work, which, like mourning, has an end.
