Metaphor is a critical tool for thought. Lying at the heart of every systematic body of knowledge are three root metaphors — mechanism, organism, and mind. Historically, schools of philosophy — realism, naturalism, and idealism — have grown up around these metaphors. The root metaphors and their corresponding philosophies provide the paradigms underlying different exemplars of education. To illustrate how metaphors, paradigms, and exemplars all shape educational thought, the works of three educators — Hunter, Piaget, and Bruner — have been selected. MÉTAPHORE, PARADIGME ET ÉDUCATION La métaphore constitue un outil fondamental de la pensée. En effet, trois métaphores dites radicales sont au coeur de chacun des systèmes de connaissances structurés : la métaphore mécanique, la métaphore organique et la métaphore spirituelle. Au cours de l’Histoire, le développement de certaines écoles de philosophie telles que le réalisme, le naturalisme et l’idéalisme s’est fait autour de ces métaphores. Les métaphores radicales et les philosophies qui leur sont associées sont à la base des paradigmes autour desquels s’articulent les différents modèles éducationnels. Les travaux de trois théoriciens de l’éducation — Hunter, Piaget et Bruner — ont été choisis pour illustrer la manière dont les métaphores, les paradigmes et les modèles façonnent la pensée pédagogique.La métaphore constitue un outil fondamental de la pensée. Mimesis și reprezentare: Platon, Aristotel și paradigma artei islamice / Mimesis and representation: Plato, Aristotle and the paradigm of islamic artCiutescu, Sergiu-Alexandru (Bucarest : Institutul de istorie Nicolae IorgaPERSÉE : Université de Lyon, CNRS & ENS de Lyon, 2014)The views on mimesis supported both by Plato and Aristotle are two different ways of understanding representational art. If Plato sees representational art more as a world-reflecting device, similar to a (deformed and deforming) mirror, Aristotle understands it as a way of creating a world by reproducing the functioning mechanism of reality, by understanding the universals and by expressing them in works of art. Both theories see work of art as representation, while the Islamic paradigm of art, even if not explicitly theorized, lets us conclude that works of art should be referential by resemblance rather than representational. This fact encourages the development of an metaphor of aesthetics that requires a religiously informed eye to be proper understood. While the theories of Plato and Aristotle are both rooted in philosophical thought, the Islamic view over art is rooted in religious thought and, as we argue in the present study, this is the reason for which the latter falls into none of the two types of understanding the art (as world-reflecting or world-creating) to which western thought is tributary.

These models, in turn, mirror their respective root metaphors. Three root metaphors – spiritual, organic, and mechanical – have dominated western thought. The spiritual metaphor runs from Plato, through Hegel, and connects with Montessori. The organic metaphor extends from Aristotle, through Darwin, and joins with Dewey. And the mechanical metaphor stems from Democritus, through Newton, and links with Skinner. The three metaphors have played a germinal role in western philosophy. They have also shaped the character of educational thought and practice. Which model to choose? Your choice will depend upon the purpose or aim you have in mind. Modèles et métaphores Résumé. L’humanité prend plaisir à échafauder des modèles conceptuels du monde. Ces modèles, à leur tour, reflètent leurs métaphores-racines. Trois métaphores-racines – spirituelle, organique et mécanique – dominent la pensée occidentale. La métaphore spirituelle part de Platon, passe par Hegel et conduit à Montessori. La métaphore organique se développe à partir d’Aristote, passe par Darwin et débouche sur Dewey. Et la métaphore mécanique provient de Democritus, passe par Newton et mène à Skinner. A cognitive linguistic analysis of conceptual metaphors in Hindu religious discourse with reference to Swami Vivekananda’s complete worksZawada, Britta; Wilsenach, A. C.; Naicker, Suren (2017-04-13)This thesis investigates the use of metaphorical language in The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda is one of the most influential modern-day Hindu scholars, and his interpretation of the ancient Hindu scriptural lore is very significant. Vivekananda’s influence was part of the motivation for choosing his Complete Works as the empirical
 domain for the current study. Vivekananda’s Complete Works were mined using AntConc, for water-related terms which seemed to have a predilection for metaphoricity. Which terms to search for specifically was determined after a manual reading of a sample from the Complete Works. The data was then tagged, using a convention inspired by the well-known
 MIPVU procedure for metaphor identification. Thereafter, a representative sample of the data was chosen, and the metaphors were mapped and analysed thematically.
 This study had as its main aim to investigate whether Hindu religious discourse uses metaphors to explain abstract religious concepts, and if so, whether this happens in the same way as in Judaeo-Christian traditions. Furthermore, following Jäkel (2002), a set of sub-hypotheses pertaining to ubiquity, domains, models, unidirectionality, invariance,
 necessity, creativity and focussing is assessed.
 Key findings in this study include a general confirmation of the above-mentioned hypotheses, with the exception of ‘invariance’, which proved to be somewhat contentious. The data allowed for the postulation of underlying conceptual metaphors, which differed somewhat from the metaphors used in traditional Judaeo-Christian philosophy.
