Report of Community Concerns among Muslim Students, Faculty and Staff at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG)

Abstract

This report summarizes the data collected from the implementation of a survey among Muslim students, faculty and staff at UNCG. It also includes a summary of the discussion at a community meeting, which was held to give voice and meaning to the data collected. When reading this report, it is important to note that we did not change any data submitted by people completing the survey. Both the numeric ratings of items, and the text comments submitted, reflect the community members completing the survey. Neither the authors of this report, the UNCG Muslim Student Association, or others on campus, agree with all of the comments as stated. It is important to include comments from those surveyed, even though they might be disagreeable (maybe even especially when they are). Next steps in the process. It is important that the initial survey summary and the initial community meeting are not the final activities. The data summarized here call for the need for more dialogue, more understanding, increased emphasis on our shared work to promote a safe and engaging climate for study and growth in a University context. There are initial questions to guide discussion on pages 3 and 4 of this report. Please use them as you reflect upon, and discuss the findings presented here. It will be important to prioritize things to change and improve, in order to improve UNCG for everyone. This is a public university, with real investment in promoting knowledge, understanding, collaboration and trust, in order to serve the people within this community. We hope that these values, and additional work together will result in a better climate for study and personal development at UNCG.
