Debilidad de la voluntad como irracionalidad furtiva

Abstract

According to a widely extended conception, people display weakness of the will when they act freely and intentionally against their own judgment regarding what is best. However, there is another conception according to which persons display weakness of the will when they act against their reasonable intentions. On the basis of this conception focused on intentions, my objective is to specify two conditions of rationality in order to characterize actions against reasonable intentions as cases of irrationality. On the one hand, I demonstrate the extent to which intentions can be reasonable. Only in this case can an action that goes against an already formed intention be actually irrational. According to my thesis, intentions can only be reasonable when they identify our best reasons, and this can become evident only if intentions can be judged. On the other hand, I explain the extent to which a person intending to pursue a reasonable end might possibly not establish the means neces- sary to achieve that end. Thus, a person displays weakness of the will only when he or she establishes an end to be pursued but not the means to achieve said end. In this respect, I explain that the means needed to achieve a complex end are vague. Therefore, a person displays weakness of the will when it is neither true nor false that the means selected actually achieve the established end.

De acuerdo con una concepción muy extendida, una persona tiene una volun- tad débil cuando actúa libre e intencionalmente en contra de su juicio acerca de lo que es mejor. De esta concepción puede distinguirse una alternativa, según la cual, una persona tiene una voluntad débil cuando actúa en contra de su intención razonable. Partiendo de esta concepción en términos de intenciones, intento es- pecificar dos condiciones de racionalidad para caracterizar a la acción en contra de intenciones razonables como un caso de irracionalidad. Muestro, por un lado, en qué medida las intenciones pueden ser razonables. Sólo en ese caso es que una acción en contra de la intención ya formada puede, efectivamente, ser irracional. De acuerdo con mi tesis, las intenciones sólo pueden ser razonables cuando de- tectan nuestras mejores razones. Esto sólo puede mostrarse si las intenciones son susceptibles de juicio. Por otro lado, explico en qué medida una persona que se propone un fin razonable, puede no proponerse los medios necesarios para ello. Una persona es, pues, débil en su voluntad sólo cuando se propone un fin, pero no los medios necesarios para éste. Explico en este punto que los medios necesarios para la realización de un fin complejo son vagos. Una persona tiene, entonces, una voluntad débil cuando no es ni falso ni verdadero que los medios que ella se procura realizan el fin que se propone.
