AbstractOne major pedagogical objective in e-learning is to offer a group of learners the opportunity to personally get involved in what they are doing with one another by providing them with a communication environment for project management (the project being their co-organisation of time, concepts, tools and tasks). Throughout this article, we carry out an investigation concerning the possibility of augmenting the social dimension of current e-learning activities. We are in fact intrigued by the socio-cognitive implications of mixing categories of e-learners. It would seem that the institutional pressure on conducting group learning does not to take into account the relational requirements for collaboration. We argue that matching up of students' socio-professional backgrounds should receive more attention in e-learning research.
