Professional Development (PD) of teachers in the use of Information and Communication Technology is an international priority; however it is commonly acknowledged that traditional models of PD are not effective in engendering change. In particular, literature points to the failure of traditional models in addressing the need for sustained engagement. As a result, this research tackles the task of investigating how a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) can address these issues with a particular focus on supporting a Community of Practice (CoP) that, by its very nature, involves the sustained engagement of members in socially negotiated and authentic learning contexts. This paper represents the initial stage of a three year study and presents an argument for the use of a VLE enabled CoP to address post face to face entropy. The audience will also be called upon for valued input to guide the second phase of this research.Date
