Wardriving around Campus: Assessing the security of selected campus WLANs

Abstract

As in business environments and residential homes, wireless networking is quickly finding its way into educational institutions. Unfortunately, wireless users are often unaware of the vulnerability of wireless local area networks (WLANs). Wardriving, making use of a laptop to identify insecure networks, can be a useful tool in pointing out these vulnerabilities. This poster session will display the procedures and results of the presenter's wardriving surveys of the wireless networks of several selected educational institutions, and then discuss some of the appropriate precautions that networks and network users can take.
