The Need for Developing Math Teachers’ “Knowledge for Teaching”, for an Effective Use of Technological Tools
AbstractOur previous research on the use of technologies suggested that one important requirement for an effective use of technological tools is that the teachers possesses an adequate knowledge of the subject matter (mathematics), pedagogical techniques, but most importantly of what is called in the literature, "Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching". For this end, we designed a research project which had the objective to create an effective program to improve teachers' pedagogical content knowledge in Mexico. This article will show the theoretical framework constructed in order to design proper studies and to analyze the observations. In the research presented here, three pilot workshops with elementary school teachers were implemented to reveal and improve their knowledge. Their conducting theme was: "Which are the most important concepts in arithmetic?" Each workshop was organized as a series of tasks, problems and reading materials for the teachers.
