There is a rapidly growing demand for Web-based enterprise applications. For developmentof such applications, the specific needs of scalability, security, reliability, maintainability, extensibility, flexibility, manageability, portability, and platform-independence should be addressed. This is a majorissue involved in development of Web-based enterprise applications. In this paper, we present acomponent-based approach to developing Web-based enterprise applications. We also explain how thisapproach addresses the major issue. Our approach makes use of component-based software development,3-tier Web-based application architectures, and Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). We haveadopted the new approach in several R&D projects. We provide an overview of one such project that wassponsored by IBM. In addition, we present lessons learned and future plans. We also provide thebackground information regarding the methods and technologies employed in this new approach. Keywords: Component-based software development, Web-based enterprise applications, Java 2 PlatformEnterprise Edition (J2EE), JavaBeans, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), Java Server Pages (JSP), RemoteMethod Invocation (RMI), Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP), Java Database Connectivity (JDBC),eXtensible Markup Language (XML)Date
