Teaching University-Level Computer Science to High School Students over the Web

AbstractThe need for novel approaches to attract high school students to information technologyrelated careers is huge. At the same time, very few high school teachers have been trained to teachthese topics. In collaboration with high school teachers in the rarely populated district of NorthKarelia, Finland, the department of Computer Science of the local university created a program toteach university-level Computer Science studies for high school students. The goal was to provide aflexible and reliable learning environment for the students to ensure a meaningful way of learning.The educational design is based on a Candle model: the students get help to their authentic learningneeds from the web-based environment, in terms of exercises, learning tools, and feedback.However, the learning material consists of real textbooks. Preliminary results indicate that thescheme chosen has motivated the students to carry on their learning efforts.
