Abstract
The aim of the article is to show that from the beginning of the great movements of the Gnostic school of the 2nd cent. AD the tendency towards a Gnostic dualism (in religious life as well as in philosophical thought) can be seen as a constant factor throughout the centuries, right up to the 21st. The history of Eastern and Western European history over the centuries makes this clear. This study seeks to summarise the most representative words and deeds of the Gnostics in the course of our history, through the docetists, the Manicheans, the Montanists, the Messalians, etc. In order to make the evolution apparent, the list has followed a chronological order according to the various countries or regions and has taken into account the diverse cultural emphases brought by the Greek, Latin, Albanian, Italian dialects, Occitan, Provencal, Catalan, French, Hungarian, Hebrew (the Slavonic languages: Bulgarian, Croatian, Bosnian, Russian, etc). For all that the list is not complete, it demonstrates the cultural extent of Gnosticism. In addition, it is important to include a brief description of the Cabala, because within that (pace G. G. Scholem) Gnostic thought of a Jewish origin experienced a considerable revival from the end of the 12th century in Provence and it continues right up to the present day.
