AbstractThe present paper focuses on some aspects regarding the return of religion overlooked by contemporary philosophy: 1) the inability of secular language to account for deeply traumatic events such as violent death, forced disappearance and the demystification of the body in market societies; 2) the positive contributions of some religions to popular education, particularly in places where the State has failed as well as in the case of Afro-Americans, religion as a dignifying and emancipating force; 3) the articulation of religious fundamentalism with late capitalism, where an unregulated market coexists with repressive moral codes and family values.
