[[abstract]]This dissertation uses the creative medium of oil paintings as it is the one the author is most familiar with. These paintings depict a realistic style in contrast with previous pieces, displaying the how the tension of culture and the performance factor of realism complement one another. It also shows that viewers are capable of perceiving the message of the artwork through both their eyes and mind. The viewpoint discussed here is one of the people, using imagery from everyday life to depict memory. It shows how “worship, marketplaces and roadside banquets” have changed and the elements preserved as the time changes, while at the same time eliciting the emotion of the viewer. From secular observations of the peasantry, their resilience is shown. In works of artists such as Lan Yinding, Hung Tung, Wu-Li,Yu-Ge, Yuan Jinta, Lu, Fang and Angus Chiang , strong depictions of emotion and humanity can be seen almost anywhere you look. This dissertation is comprised of five sections. The contents are as follows. Section One, Intro.: A conceptual description of motives, research goals and methodology. Section Two, Literature Review: A discussion of the origins and traits of practices such as worship, marketplaces and roadside banquets through secular observations of the peasantry. Section Three, Work Interpretation: Reflections on material, style, medium and process as well as introductions to the work of artists. Section Four, Thought Process: Comprised of two series: (1)“Festivities and Parades” Series: The atmosphere of temple festivals are transformed into scenes and integrated into the pieces. These works search for new interpretations in vintage memories through the artists secular observations. (2)“In the Market” series: The diligence of the peasantry is faithfully depicted in these pieces. Section Five, Conclusion and Aspirations: In the process of gathering related literature, it was discovered that records of theories (text) and artworks (paintings) supporting each other are somewhat lacking. Therefore, this dissertation conducts research in this respect. Finally, I aspire to go deeper in future academic and artistic endeavors.
