dc.description.abstractThe pressures which have been exerted on all levels of our educational system to provide more extended schooling to an ever increasing proportion of our youth have forced us to experiment with a wide range of devices and techniques in order to meet the challenge of numbers. Among the many innovations, none has created quite the impact that resulted from Skinner's introduction of the teaching machine. Initially it was the machine that captured the imagination of the professionals and the public at large; however, it was soon recognized that the crucial element was the programme.
