The purpose of this article is to analyze the relationship between the carmelite monks and the "Irmandade da Boa Morte" in the village of Angra dos Reis between 1814 and 1826. In these years, there was an increasing conflict between the State and the Catholic Church with the subsequent production of a regular anti-clergy legislation. The intention of this paper is to understand how this new context interfered in the survival strategies of the protagonists.Date
