The Student Strike o 1931

Abstract

"The white teachers and administrator who served Oakwoodfrom 1896 to 1931 were hard working, self-sacrificing, dedicated, and committed women and men who often jeopardized their lives in building a school for blacks during an age of extreme racial prejudice. At times, they were even subjected to physical assaults. They shared long hours of toil and sweat with their students as they worked by their sides on the farm, in the forest, at the sawmill, in the woodwork shop, in the cannery, at building classrooms, dormitories, cottages, and furniture, and on all the other tasks necessary for the operation of the Oakwood school."
